Romance is alive and effervescent with bold colours and Spanish flare and is a trend that is being seen across the board at fashion week this September.
Off the shoulder or cold shoulder, sheer, lace and frills are coming to the forefront producing some really dreamy and delicate pieces for Spring/Summer 2016.
Proenza Schouler, Michael Kors, Altuzarra, Oscar de la Renta,
and Temperely London delivered collections that were reminiscent of a Spanish
senorita draped in delicate fabrics with great attention to detail leading to
some beautiful embroidery and rich saturated prints and tantalizing silhouettes
that were dreamy and an aide-mémoire to the richness and vigor of Spanish
society.
The sheerness of dresses and the catch me if you can qualities
of elusive lace are reminiscent of a haute-couture dress designed by Yves Saint
Laurent for a shoot by Bill Ray for Life Magazine in 1968. The sheer delicate top
of the dress matched with the skirt embellished with feathers and a further
draping of sheer fabric to accentuate the leg which he designed during a period
of revolution following the 1950s and the sheer volume of alcohol and drug
consumption which had led a population to seek an alternative healthier
lifestyle, a detox from Studio 54 if you will. The new body type coming into
play following a period of extreme dieting and fads such as removing ones
wisdom teeth to achieve a more emaciated cheekbone was the body of the
health-conscious individual.
In today’s society that is of the upmost importance to the fast
paced modern woman.
I think that the romantic trend which is sashaying down the
runways pays heed to this with the use of frills, delicate high cut necklines and
lace which frame the shoulders of a woman which also is relevant as this is the
forefront erogenous zone being concentrated on in Spring/Summer 16.

In the 1980s New Romanticism originally started as a counter
trend to Punk, an attempt at a more individual style of dressing as opposed to
the uniformity of Punk. It was started by very creatively driven people who
were interested in more tailored clothes and a style of fashion that was less
anti-fashion and instead an exploration of Hollywood glamour and luxurious
factual and fictional dress to draw attention. There was a great use of frills,
lace and more expensive fabrics to create the allure of grandeur and glamour
that is closely associated with Romanticism. Dressing up was the theme of the
trend, and this drew from fictional appreciation of pirate tales and damsels in
distress, Vivienne Westwood was one of the first designers to engage with the
trend that was becoming popular on the streets of London, so it can be said
that the popularity of it trickled up from there and she went on to design for
the new wave band Adam and the Ants who were popular in the 1970s and early 80s
– her pirate look.
